Comment on Bumper Sticker Liberals by Sorrel

Ha! That's a great line, "bumper sticker liberal"-- it immediately sounded like a classic. Personally, I'm not offended by people's bumper stickers. I respect people saying whatever the f**k they believe, not the least because it gives me an idea of who's around me. (Except that it is not necessarily a correct assumption, which I will get to later.) Also, putting a label on your car is sticking a label on yourself, which can a vulnerable position, even if it's just being labeled a liberal or a tasteless idiot. I respect the small courage of opening oneself to being labeled (and it is courage if that label is hated by your neighbors). The problem I have is that bumper stickers--unless we each write them ourselves-- are somebody else's label that we are persuaded to wear as our own. It seems like a small example of how democracy works in mass society: the individual expresses him or herself by choosing from a set of prefabricated set of opinions or personalities. Just like a vote, or consumer choice.

The reason I don't have any bumper stickers now is simply that I almost never see a sticker that says what I believe. The only exception I can think of is one that said "Fight Patriotism". I felt authentic sporting that during the decades' wars. In general they never say things in ways that I would. I am currently a car user and I do want to show support for causes as I drive around in my little contribution to the world's problems, and that's the main thing bumper stickers are good for. But the stickers handed out to show support for causes almost always tacitly suggest support for institutions or ideologies that I do NOT support. Or at least they leave me wanting to clarify. Does "Free Palestine!" just mean supporting Palestinians struggling against their oppressors, or is it read as welcoming them to incorporate into the family of nation states? This one is at least open ended, and I'd put it on my car, but what if the only choice is "Support Palestinian Statehood"? In the realm of realpolitik I do support Palestinian statehood, but if that's my bumper sticker it implies that I'm a statist and want you to support states too. I'd have to write under it, "even if you hate states", to come close to expressing my opinion and self-contradictions.

Bumper stickers reflect the way our authentic views are co-opted by groups who just want to use us for their own purposes. It takes initiative to maintain your autonomous voice, which is always more interesting than the pre-fabricated message someone else wants to plaster on you. I always intend to make my own bumper stickers, but just haven't. (How many things can I say THAT about! Too many!) It would be a fun activity to do with friends some night. I have a few written down somewhere that I never got around to rendering. One would have a picture of a waiter with the caption, "Are you enjoying class society today?" I can't remember many others.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that bumper stickers would be cool if we really used them to express ourselves, rather than let them use us as product endorsements. The same goes for a lot of forms of expression in mass society, including the mass demonstration.

Great to read your thoughts, Deanna. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the Occupy movement and what's gone down in Oakland. I've been thinking about them in relation to the protests in Wisconsin this past winter (which were very managed demonstrations for the status quo) and to critics from the anarchist side who are skeptical of their orientation.

Wow, ZM, I guess it is all linked in these little circles! It is neat that you had that connection. And OMG about being hospitalized. I didn't get my felony conspiracy charge until 10 years later. Luckily, I think by that point they had figured out they shouldn't beat up protestors.

A lovely post- I like your political blogs. I have to admit I haven't seen Milk- read the book, as always. I was hugely affected by the whole Dan White riots and aftermath - not directly, but because in 1984 when I was arrested for a felony conspiracy and then beaten up and hospitalized by the police- it was a survivor of the DWR's and that police violence who came to my assistance.

A loose group linked to Bound Together came to aid and support those of us who has be beaten around the DemCon-84 and through them we were taught the history of Milk, Moscone, Feinstein and Dan White.

There is such a long legacy of social justice- and injustice- its nice to take a step back and reflect upon it. I still find the footage of Feinstein's announcement utterly painful.

I adore you blog- and I have to say - you are remarkably talented as a massage therapist. And seriously, I am not just saying that to be nice- I am insanely picky about my bodyworkers b/c I am spoiled living here in the Bay Area.

Thanks and let me add a happy testimonial anytime about your healing touch. Out of pain for the first time since the car crash.

That's a beautiful bed and a beautiful feeling behind it. We should not be ashamed about actions that come out of love, even if they may be naive.
My husband and I have been meeting kids from Colombia (through Kidsave) and are going down to LA to meet another little girl this weekend. Our hopes are to adopt one child from Colombia and later one, one through the foster system here. We'll see...
Good luck with your search. At least you know now what to look for and you've certainly opened my eyes as well!
Best-
Gisah

I love the Castle bed and have to admit- and kind of hate to- that I felt like I SHOULD have had something that great for our kids... we barely had a crib when the Commander came hom.... and now-a-days- they like to sleep on the floor with their noses pressed against the crack of the door, but I digress...

I still love that castle bed and it touches my heart that you put so much effort in securing and installing that perfect bed for your kids.... And can I just say- the kids area in general- so beyond impressive and thought filled!! I have to admit when you were advertising it- I almost jumped!

I just want to honor how amazing you guys are and were as parents and how inspired the spaces you created were for the T's were and are.

I love the castle bed because it taps into the little girl inside me and promise of cherishing the little girl inside whatever girl-children you let into your lives!

Just saying- a powerful symbol- you rock!

I am just so sorry you had to have this experience. It such a gamble the whole foster to adopt experience. Unfortunately, the systems are outdate, out of step with the needs of both kids and parents and at the mercy of local departments and social worker discretion.

Hi- I just wanted to say a big thanks for writing this blog. My husband and I just completed our PRIDE classes and are hoping to adopt in Santa Clara county. We know another couple who adopted siblings in Alameda county (but now live out of state) and they have provided lots of good info.
The information you provide has been so helpful to both my husband and me. We are at the very beginning stages but will continue to follow your story with your two girls. This last blog was one of the most informative as we do not want to start the process without knowing what we're getting into. I trained as a child advocate so I'm familiar with some issues facing the children in the system. Attachment issues are what scares me the most and we will just have to be diligent in asking the right questions and not being afraid of saying what we feel.
Thanks again!

Notice that there is hardly any work on any given day for either of us. How do single or poor parents do this? I don't get it.

I am sorry its so hard - you have our support for any and all decisions you make regarding your family. Having seen you in action- I know you are doing a terrific job!

Its so frustrating to me that the social workers were not up front with you about the condition and needs of your kids... Unfair to all involved and another way the system is broken.

Let me know what we can do to support you and J!!!
